Orchestral PerformancesThis collection of a few of Dennis Brain’s many orchestral recordings includes the first CD reissues of the Méhul, Haydn and Rossini.
Pictured on the back cover are Neill Sanders, Edmund Chapman and Alfred Cursue, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th horns in the Philharmonia Orchestra recordings in this collection.
Dennis Brain’s vast discography of orchestral recordings is thoroughly documented in Robert L. Marshall’s superb Dennis Brain on Record (Margun Music, Inc. 1996). Based on his listing of the Royal Philharmonic horn sections during Dennis Brain’s tenure as principal it is likely that Ian Beers was 2nd horn in the Cosi aria recorded during the time when the RPO played at Glyndebourne.
La Chasse du Jeune Henri (1795) features horns in A and D playing the French sonneries Bat-l’eau and Hallali. Joining D.B.and Beers in Sir Thomas’s romp through the woods were probably Alan Civil, Andrew Woodburn, Frank Probyn and Robert Noble.
These recordings have been digitally restored from the original LPs except for Haydn’s Hornsignal Symphony movements which are from a 45 rpm EP.
The original discs were first cleaned on a Keith Monks Mk II record cleaning machine. They were played back on a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable with Linn Ittok arm and Monster Alpha Genesis 2000 moving coil cartridge through an Audio Research SP11 Mk II tube preamplifier using Diamond Cut software in the digital conversion and restoration.
