The Vienna Philharmonic Wind Group made a series of LPs
for the Westminster Recording Company in the early 1950‘s. Repertoire
included the major works for winds by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and
Strauss. The members of the Wind Group were all long-time members of the
Vienna Philharmonic and included two musicians who are stilt revered for
their beauty of playing.
Principal clarinet Leopold Wlach (1902 1956) and principal horn Gottfried
von Freiberg (1908 - 1962) both joined the Philharmonic in 1928 and were
professors at the Vienna Academy. While Wlach left commercial recordings
of solo repertoire by Mozart and Brahms, Freiberg did not. The Vienna
Philharmonic Wind Group recordings provide an opportunity to hear these
artists along with their colleagues in settings both intimate and
virtuosic.

Sotone Historic Recordings use the best LP/tape sources
available and have recently acquired some important original studio master
tapes for restoration and future release.
The original LP discs were first cleaned on a Keith Monks Mk II
record-cleaning machine. They were played back on a Linn Sondek LP12
turntable with Linn Ittok arm and Monster Alpha Genesis 2000 moving colt
cartridge through an Audio Research SP1 1 Mark II tube preamplifier. A
custom built PC with a Waveterminal 192X sound card and Diamond Cut Five
software were used in the digital conversion and restoration. |
