Parisian Horn Music
Buy 4 CDs & save $10! The music on this CD was all published in Paris. Jean-Joseph Mouret's (1682 - 1738) Second Suite of Simphonies was published in October, 1729 shortly after its premiere performance for the King at the Hôtel de Ville. Set in the form of a French Overture-Suite, the horns, double reeds and strings evoke hunting and pastoral scenes. Frederic Duvernoy (1765 - 1838) was one the great French hand horn virtuosi. The Concerto No. 5 represents his "cor mixte" style of playing keeping to the middle register of the F horn. Antonin Reicha (1770 - 1836) left his native Prague to live in Vienna in 1802 and in 1808 settled in Paris where is composition students included Berlioz, Gounod, Franck and Liszt. Reicha's 24 Trios for Three Horns, Op. 82 were composed in Paris before 1815.Georges Barboteu (b. 1924) was born in Algeria where his father was horn professor at the Conservatoire d'Algiers. Beginning in 1948 he played in the French Orchestre National, Opéra-comique and Paris Opera before becoming principal horn of the Concerts Lamoureux and, in 1969, the Orchestre de Paris. He was horn professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1969-1989. |
This classic recording of six of Reicha's Trios received the Grand Prix - Academie Charles Cros Paris in 1961. It is brilliantly performed by members of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra whose principal horn at the time was Miroslav Stefek (1916 - 1969). The recordings presented here have been digitally restored from original LP sources. The discs were first cleaned on a Keith Monks Mk II record-cleaning machine. They were played back on a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable with Linn Ittok arm and Monster Alpha Genesis 2000 moving coil cartridge through an Audio Research SP11 Mk II tube preamplifier. A custom built PC with M-Audio Delta Series Audiophile 2496 sound card and Diamond Cut software were used in the digital conversion and restoration. |
